PS4 Issues: user switching

Last week I bought myself the oh-so-new Playstation 4. It’s my first time jumping to the early adopters -train of a new console generation - and I’m really excited about it.

As one would expect, the software isn’t finished yet. There are some usability issues that bother me, and I know I’m not alone. I’ll go through some of these and try to paint a few pictures on how to make it better.

User Switching

I don’t know how Sony managed to make it such complicated multi step process. Now it goes like this:

  1. I hold PS button to enter the shutdown menu.

  2. The shutdown / log off -menu shows up.

  3. I select “Log Out of PS4” by moving the selection focus one step down.

  4. I push X to make the selection.

  5. A message “Press the PS button to use the controller” shows up.

  6. I push the PS button.

  7. I get to see another message: “DUALSHOCK4 wireless controller connected. Who is using this controller?”.

  8. I select the other profile on my PS4 by moving the selection focus one step right.

  9. I push X to make the selection.

  10. Boom - I am finally logged into the other user profile.
I know the case of having multiple users isn’t a priority when designing a new console interface, but I’ve been juggling a few accounts since I first got my PS3. It’d be great if the users (most people have just a few) would be selectable directly from the shutdown menu, and not by first logging off and then selecting another one. I was able to choose my wanted user profile in PS3, so why not now?
